Darlington’s SAT scores jump 30 points, top state average by 205 points

Darlington’s SAT scores, recently released by The College Board, show a 30-point improvement over last year’s scores, besting the state average by 205 points and the national average by 180 points.

Not only did the total average scores improve, but Darlington students also improved on each of the three individual categories, as well. The critical reading (CR) score went up 13 points to 553; the math (M) score went up five points to 570; and the writing (WR) score went up 12 points to 541, for a total of 1664. The state average was 1459, and the national average was 1484.

“We are, of course, delighted with the improvement in our student’s scores. We credit this largely to our strong college-preparatory curriculum and the fact that we encourage our students to stretch themselves – to take the most rigorous curriculum that they can handle,” said Dean of College Guidance Sam Moss (’63). “In analyzing our scores, it is also important to remember that all of our students are college prep – and, therefore, they all take the SAT. We believe that our curriculum prepares them very well for the test.”

The SAT is one of the two standardized tests used for college admissions. The test, administered by The College Board, is seen as one assessment of a student’s readiness for college.

Darlington officials are pleased to be able to share this information publicly this year after a change in the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s Principles of Good Practice that no longer prohibits the publication of average scores by member schools.
