Fall for the Arts returns for Alumni Weekend

September 30, 2016 | 691 views

Darlington School’s Fall for the Arts returns on Friday, Oct. 21, from noon until 3 p.m. on the Morris Chapel Lawn. The fall festival, held in conjunction with Alumni Weekend, will celebrate the contributions of the fine arts and offer a variety of ways for attendees to explore their artistic side.

Fall for the Arts is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to actively make, sit back and relax, and take in the sounds, sights and smells of the fall favorite.

This year's festival will be themed "Renaissance" and will feature performances and activities led by professional and student performers. Among the educational components planned are performances by a theater troupe from the Rome Shakespeare Festival who will present “Romeo and Juliet” to the younger students during the regular school day and at the festival.

"We are excited about the Renaissance theme," said Kim Tunnell, director of fine arts. "Students and participants will have opportunities to create, observe and participate in activities with a common flair throughout the entire day. We are so fortunate to be a part of a school that supports the arts and allows us to celebrate all of the arts in this way."

Darlington artists will be displaying their handmade artwork and crafts and local artisans and crafters will once again be on-site showing and selling their original work. Most vendors will take cash, check and credit cards for payment. Alumni interested in showcasing their artistic talents in the school-wide art exhibition are invited to contact the fine arts department.

Cotton candy, popcorn, drinks, and baked goods from a cake walk and bake sale will also be available for purchase at the event. In an effort to make it easier for students to enjoy the treats without having to keep up with money, pre-paid armbands are being offered for $5 or $10. Armbands can be used at the food stations, which feature items priced at $.50 or $1. Whole pies, cakes and breads will be available for $7-10 as well. Cash or armbands will be accepted at all food stations.

Event T-shirts with artwork designed by Sophie Drake ('22) are now available for advanced purchase in both short sleeve ($15) and long sleeve ($18). There is an additional charge for XXL and XXXL sizes.

Free parking will be available in the Huffman Athletic Center and Trippeer parking lots, as well as in the gravel lot adjacent to the baseball field.

Fall for the Arts is sponsored by the Darlington Fine Arts Booster Club. All proceeds help cover the cost of the event.
