Selena Chen ('16)

The graphic design work of recent graduate Selena Chen (’16) has provided the brand new look for the Dow Jones News Fund’s Adviser Update. The quarterly digital magazine is geared towards media teachers and advisers, and features news stories and highlights from high school writing, design and photography.

The new layout, all from Chen’s original vision, debuted in the spring issue of the publication, which was also the first digital version.

Following its release, Darlington Media Arts Director Adrienne Forgette was flooded with messages of praise for the magazine's new appearance.

“Selena is a master of design and we were lucky to have her in our yearbook class,” said Forgette, who was selected as the publication’s editor-in-chief earlier this year. “All of the feedback that I've received from colleagues around the country has focused on her design. It has been called clean, contemporary and stunning, and one person even said they were ‘Blown away.’”

While at Darlington, Chen served as the managing editor of design for the Jabberwokk, and was recently honored with the George and Betsy Awsumb Senior Art Collection Award and the Jabberwokk Award. Earlier in the spring, she was recognized by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers with Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, including a regional Silver Key for her painting, “What Do You See?” and a Honorable Mention for her printmaking piece, “Caged.”

Chen was also this year’s class salutatorian, and will be attending Barnard College in New York this fall to possibly pursue a major in architecture.

The alumna, who lives in Rome, is currently working on the layout for the next issue of Adviser Update remotely from China.
