Darlington to present “The Curious Savage”

April 19, 2016 | 499 views

Darlington’s fine arts department will present “The Curious Savage” by John Patrick at the Zelle Black Box Theatre April 21-23. Performances will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 p.m., and on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The production tells the story of Ethel Savage, a widow left with a substantial fortune, who is committed against her will to a private sanatorium by her greedy adult stepchildren. While there, she gets to know five colorful patients and discovers authenticity, honor, kindness, and beauty where she least expected it. Comedy and drama are woven together in this delightful play, reminding the audience that the seemingly neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that often appears motivated only by greed and dishonesty.

The story was chosen by the fine arts department to coincide with Darlington's centennial celebration of the student-created Honor Code.

"Our spring play deals with the idea of honor in that it's about taking care of others, and the honor in recognizing our differences as being something that brings us all together for a purpose," said Kim Tunnell, director of fine arts. "When considering our Honor Code and that you will not lie, cheat or steal—it's not just about school work. It is also about how you treat people."

The talented company of 29 encompasses grades 9-12 and includes students from the Bahamas, China, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Vietnam

"Several students who worked backstage earlier in the school year have transitioned and decided to be on stage for this production," added Tunnell. "It's great to see these kids take risks, and to know that they feel comfortable and supported. [Theatre Director] Shelley Daniel makes sure with each performance that every student feels like an equally important part of the production."

Tickets for the spring play are $7 each. Due to the limited seating available in the Black Box Theatre, all patrons are required to reserve seats for this event. Reserved seating will be available to members of the Darlington Community until April 11, when ticket sales open to the general public. Click here to reserve seats.
