Garrett (’82) encourages students to live with honor beyond gates of Darlington

During his keynote this morning in Morris Chapel, Darlington alumnus Dr. Daniel "Dan" Garrett ('82) shared musings from his life and career, stressing the importance of putting "honor above everything" into practice beyond graduation. Students in grades 9-12, Upper School faculty, and special guests were in attendance, as the school officially opened Career Day.

As an integral part of his presentation, the economist tied in the 100th anniversary of Darlington’s student-created Honor Code and his role as Honor Council president with career milestones and different turning points in his life. Garrett thoughtfully delivered entertaining stories from his time in student leadership and as an undergraduate, and how his experience at Darlington helped to send him along the path to success.

“My one-sentence 'life plan' is to live long and prosper in the context of being a moral and noble person,” said the alum. “I’m grateful to Darlington’s honor system for helping define that path for me and for treating me, while I was here, as someone who would live up to that.”

Garrett also explained how his alma mater prepared him to think clearly, communicate effectively, and ultimately find and gravitate towards his calling.

As a vice president of the California-based Cornerstone Research, the economic analyst has worked closely with clients in consumer products, financial institutions, pharmaceuticals and technology, among others. His specialties include product liability, antitrust and competition, arbitration, litigation, securities, labor and employment. Garrett received his B.A. in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Virginia, and went on to obtain his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.

“There are a lot of things in life that you have no control over. One factor that you can control is how hard you work,” Garrett told students. “Instead of focusing on being 'happy,' focus on the satisfaction of doing good work. Find things worth doing and spend time doing them.”

Garrett and his wife, Nancy Beth, reside in Sunnyvale, Calif., and have four children: Elizabeth, Tom, Maggie and Jack.

In addition to his time on the Honor Council, the Darlington graduate also served on Student Council and as editor of the Jabberwokk. He was a member of the Cum Laude Society and the Scholar Bowl.

Career Day is a biannual event sponsored by Darlington's Alumni Council. This year's sessions encompassed 35 alumni from across Alabama, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington, representing professions that spanned the likes of interior design to cardiology and various other disciplines.
