Seniors Keara Evans and Hunter Manning have been selected to represent Darlington in the Rome-Floyd Parks & Recreation Authority's John Pinson Jr. Outstanding Student Athlete scholarship competition.

Named in memory of Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame member John Pinson Jr., the scholarship award program recognizes two high school senior athletes in Rome and Floyd County annually with a $1,000 college scholarship.

Evans is a four-year member of the basketball, soccer and softball teams. The Lady Tigers team captain has previously been named to the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival Basketball All-Tournament team, the Lady Tiger Classic All-Tournament team, and the Region 6-AA All-Tournament team. Evans is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. She has volunteer experience throughout the community, and was honored last year with the 11th Grade Class Citizenship Award. In October, Evans was named Darlington's Homecoming Queen. She is the daughter of Candi and Kevin Evans ('87) of Rome.

"When I first met Keara, I was amazed at her maturity and her true love for her teammates, programs and the school," said Eddie Guth, Darlington's athletic director. "She is the first one to come to practice, and the last one to leave. She loves the sportsmanship and integrity that a true champion exhibits."

Manning is a four-year member of the football and lacrosse teams. The quarterback serves as president of Honor Council and vice president of Student Council, and is a member of the “Y” Cabinet and Admission Tiger Expert team. He is a past recipient of Scholar-Athlete awards in both football and in lacrosse. Manning also holds membership in the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has been designated an AP Scholar with Honor. Earlier this year, the senior was honored as one of only two students chosen to serve on Darlington's Strategic Planning Steering Committee. Manning has extensive volunteer experience serving at the Rome Community Kitchen, Rome Action Ministries, First Presbyterian Church of Rome, and in various youth football and basketball camps. He is the son of Susi and Tommy Manning of Rome.

"When watching Hunter play, you can feel the desire he imposes on everyone around him to be better and reach a level that no one sees coming," added Guth. "You can see his patience and understanding as he mentors the younger players and cares for all around him."

One female student and one male student will each be presented with a $1,000 scholarship at the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at Berry College on Feb. 29.

To be eligible for the award, candidates must have received local, area, regional or state recognition in athletics and be active in school and community organizations and activities. They must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, three letters of recommendation, and submit an essay about what it means to be a student-athlete. Each candidate will be scored based on individual scholastic achievement, individual athletic achievement, school and community involvement, and their essay.
