Six named Commended Students in National Merit Scholarship Program

Seniors Will Crawford, Alexander Roberts, Will Robertson, Carl Schriever, Adam Tarrant and Mary Margaret Wright have been named Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from Darlington and the National Merit Scholarship Corp. was presented to each student during assembly.

“The young men and women named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Will Crawford has taken 20 AP and Honors classes and was recently named an AP Scholar with Distinction by The College Board. He serves as student body president and is a member of Honor Council, Science Club (treasurer), Greenhouse Club (finance), and Band. He also holds membership in the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. As a freshman and a sophomore, Crawford played on the tennis team and rowed crew (MVP). Last year he was honored with the House Senate Award, George Eastman Young Leaders Award, the D.A.R. Medal for American History, and Yale Book Award. He is the son of Cooper ('83) and Madge (Brown) Crawford ('84) of Rome.

Alexander Roberts has taken 13 AP and Honors classes and was recently named an AP Scholar by The College Board. He is a member of the Math Team, and helped lead the school to the Class AA division title at the Georgia State Mathematics Tournament last year. Roberts also holds membership in the National Art Society and Spanish Honor Society. As a rising sophomore, the senior participated in the Duke University TIP program where he completed a summer field study in astronomy, physics and astrobiology. To date, Roberts has earned 33 hours of college credit and Dean's List recognition at the University of Alabama through the Early College admission program. He is the son of Rebecca Watson and Craig Roberts of Leesburg, Ala.
 
Will Robertson has taken 17 AP and Honors classes and was recently named an AP Scholar with Honor by The College Board. He is a member of the crew team (captain), swim team (captain and MVP), and Band. Robertson also holds membership in the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. He is the son of Katie and Brent Robertson of Kennesaw, Ga.
 
Carl Schriever has taken 19 AP and Honors classes and was recently named an AP Scholar with Distinction by The College Board. He holds membership in the Cum Laude Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. Schriever is also a member of Band and the Coosa International Tennis Academy. Last year he was honored with the E.L. Wright Award in Computer Science and the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award. He is the son of Amy and Paul Schriever of Rome.

Adam Tarrant has taken 18 AP and Honors classes and was recently named an AP Scholar with Distinction by The College Board. Tarrant serves on Honor Council, and is a member of the golf team and Band. He also holds membership in the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. The senior is a 2015 graduate of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce High School Leadership Rome program, and was also honored last year with the E.L. Wright Award in Wind Ensemble. He is the son of Melissa and Fredrick Tarrant of Rome.
 
Mary Margaret Wright has taken 19 AP and Honors classes and was recently named an AP Scholar with Honor by The College Board. She is a member of the Instrumental Music Conservatory, Band, volleyball team, swim team (captain), and Science Club. Wright also holds membership in the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. As a rising junior she participated in the Duke University TIP program where she studied tropical medicine and ethnobiology in Costa Rica. Last year Wright was honored with the Kipp-Tillman Memorial Award and Wellesley College Book Award. She is the daughter of Mary Frances and Sid Wright Sr. ('75) of Rome.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2014 PSAT/NMSQT.
