Fred Couch ('59) was recently honored with the W. Kelly Mosley Environmental Award, which recognizes the work of Alabama residents who volunteer their time to raise awareness for the environment and encourage responsible usage.

In 2007, the Darlington graduate founded the Alabama Scenic River Trail, a network of waterways that reach from northeast Alabama to the Gulf Coast that is easily navigable by canoe and kayak.

In just eight years, the project has inspired 39 new outdoor outfitter businesses to open along the route. The river trail has also encouraged the development of over 122 rest areas along the water.

In 2008, the Alabama Scenic River Trail was declared a National Recreation Trail by the United States Department of the Interior. In 2013, the trail was named by President Obama as one of the first seven National Water Trails.
