Dr. Sid Yarbrough III ('55) has been recognized by Emory University's Alumni Association with the prestigious Jake's Golden Heart Award.

Named for Dr. Judson "Jake" Ward, Emory's former dean of alumni, the honor celebrates outstanding alums that have demonstrated a continued commitment to loyalty, generosity and service to the college and to the world at large.

Yarbrough's dedication to hard work, service and academics, however, began long before his medical career.

“My father and mother felt that I needed to go to a preparatory school to be successful, and so I was sent to board at Darlington to enhance my academic standing,” said the retired orthopedic surgeon. “I owe a lot to the school.”

Yarbrough jumped right in after entering Darlington as a freshman, serving as class vice president. While in Rome, he also served as varsity track manager, participated in “D Club” and Glee Club, and also played football and soccer.

“At Darlington, I learned that honesty and integrity were very important, and that is the way that I have lived ever since,” said the former Honor Council vice president.

The Columbus, Ga. native went on to receive both his B.A. in chemistry and MD from Emory as a member of four generations to have attended the university, including his father, Sidney Jr., and son, Robert—also an orthopedic surgeon.

After graduating from medical school in 1963, Yarbrough served in the Air Force. He later returned to Columbus where he established a successful private orthopedics practice. He retired from healthcare in 1997, following 27 years of serving the local population.

“My motive was always to take care of people and do what was right by them,” said Yarbrough. “I never asked how/if patients could pay their bill, but focused first on getting them well and then worried about the other stuff later.”

After his retirement, his wife, Becky, established the Sidney H. Yarbrough III MD Endowed Scholarship in Medicine, which has helped fund the education of more than 15 medical school students. The Yarbrough family has been an avid supporter of various Emory projects and alumni initiatives.

In addition to serving on the board of advisers for the university's medical school, Yarbrough has also worked on numerous boards including the Michael C. Carlos Museum and Columbus’ Stewart Community Home. He is also a supporter of the Muscogee County Library Foundation, the Columbus State University Foundation, and First Presbyterian Church of Columbus.

As an active Darlington alum, he maintains his connection to the school as the class agent for the Class of 1955.

Sid and Becky Yarbrough reside in Columbus.
