Recent Darlington graduate Mike Sands ('15) has accepted an offer to play baseball with the Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla., where he will pitch for the Hillsborough Hawks.

The Bahamas native came to Darlington as a sophomore and played varsity baseball as the team's pitcher and starting outfielder. During his senior year as a boarding student, Sands served as the manager of Neville House.

"You never know if we are winning or losing with Mike because he stays so even keeled and relaxes his teammates and the coaching staff," said Kent Harrison ('01, LD '15), head baseball coach and associate athletic director. "He is the quiet kind of leader that goes about his business and there is never a doubt he will get the job done."
In the first half of the season, Sands sustained an injury which required surgery on his elbow, but is expected to be ready to play again by October. Despite a short final season, the pitcher managed to throw some major games over the last year.

Sands was one of the key players responsible for sending the team to the Class AA Elite 8 last year thanks to a base hit in the second game of the Sweet 16.

"When he first came into the program and met the other players it was like he had already been here for some time," said Harrison. "We are so proud of him and I know he feels the support from a Community that loves him."

Once he arrives in Florida, the rising college freshman plans to major in business.

Sands is the son of Cheryl and Billy Sands of Nassau, Bahamas.

Editor's Note: The graduate was not able to have an official signing ceremony at Darlington because of the timing of the offer.
