Gouthro (’15) to join Rome Symphony Orchestra for concerto

Darlington senior Lauren Gouthro will play the violin as a featured student musician at the Rome Symphony Orchestra's Young Artists Concert on Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m.

Earlier this year, Gouthro was named one of two high school level winners of the fifth annual Young Artists Competition, and in doing so was invited to play with the orchestra at the Rome City Auditorium.

The student is a member of the Darlington Instrumental Music Conservatory, and will perform the first movement of Wolfgang Mozart's "Violin Concerto in G Major."

"Lauren is a very gifted young musician," said Will Camp, director of the Darlington Instrumental Music Conservatory. "I am proud of the distance she has come in the year and a half that I have known her."

Winners of the competition were selected following auditions in February by a panel of judges from Berry College, Jacksonville State University and Reinhardt University. Four finalists were chosen from a group of high school and college students from Bartow, Chattooga, Cherokee, Floyd, Gordon and Polk counties.

"Branching out into our community with these kinds of auditions allow the students to get a more honest glimpse of the skill level they are expected to reach by graduation," said Camp.

"Practicing with an orchestra is a lot different than how they practice with piano accompaniment. You have to be able to not only play your own piece, but mesh in with the other players on stage as well," said Barb Beninato, president of the RSO Board of Directors. "It is an incredible experience to be able to perform with our musicians, and it really helps the students to stand out among their peers as they head to college."

The evening concert will also feature a live RSO performance of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," with narration from Dr. Joel Todino.

The Rome Symphony Orchestra is the oldest symphony in the southeast and was founded in 1921.

Lauren Gouthro is the daughter of Debby and Ambrose Gouthro of Albany, Ga.
