Award-winning author Steve Sheinkin will speak to students in grades 5-12 about his nonfiction work, "Bomb: The Race to Build and Steal the World's Most Dangerous Weapon," on Monday, April 27.

The Newbery Honor Book tells the story behind the creation of the atomic bomb, including the international discourse and secrecy that surrounded the "world's most formidable weapon."

His presentation will take place in Morris Chapel at 9:40 a.m. (grades 5-8) and at 11:15 a.m. (grades 9-12). Darlington parents are also welcome to attend.

"We bring these high-calibre authors to Darlington to expose our students to different subjects, and inspire and excite them about reading and writing," said Melinda Holmes, director of library services. "Our students are able to better understand that it's important to read for enjoyment and for lifelong learning."

Copies of Sheinkin's book are now available for $13 each in both the McCallie-Kennedy Upper School Library and the Joanne G. Yancey ELA-8 Library, and can be signed prior to the author's two presentations.

"Bomb: The Race to Build and Steal the World's Most Dangerous Weapon" appeared on last year's suggested summer reading list in preparation of Sheinkin's visit.

"We loved the fact that his story is nonfiction but is written in a narrative format," said Holmes, who booked the author last spring.

In addition to the Newbery Honor Book award, Sheinkin's work has been recognized with the Robert F. Sibert Award, YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction, Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year, Washington Post Best Books of the Year, Main Student Book Award Master List, Virginia Library Association Jefferson Cup, Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award, and as a finalist for the National Book Awards.
