Darlington to host blood drive in honor of Laura Hicks

The varsity girls basketball team wears pink in honor of Laura Hicks at the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival tournament in December.

Darlington School will host a blood drive on Thursday, March 5, in honor of Laura Hicks, Darlington’s ELA-8 Teaching and Learning Center director. The Blood Assurance Blood Vessel will be at the McCallie-Kennedy Library steps from 2 to 7 p.m. for anyone who would like to participate. Hicks was diagnosed with breast cancer last October following a planned bilateral mastectomy.

“I am so blessed and honored to be a part of the Darlington Community that has literally and figuratively embraced me and my family, especially my children,” said Hicks. “I am in awe of God’s mercy and grace upon me.”

Hicks, who has been a member of the Darlington staff since June 2012, will complete her last major round of chemotherapy on March 6. In April, she will undergo radiation for several weeks, and then take biologic medicine treatments through October.

The story of her proactive journey to have genetic testing and then undergo surgery was featured in the Rome News-Tribune last fall. Prior to her cancer diagnosis, Hicks was told there was an 87 percent chance of having the disease after she was found to have the BRCA2 (breast cancer) gene. Hicks' mother is a breast cancer survivor, and the family history of the disease made her greatly at risk.

When surgery uncovered the presence of existing cancer cells, Hicks’ life was shaken but not stirred.

“Laura’s courage and sweet spirit have been evident throughout her journey, and we are so happy to be able to honor her with this small token of love,” said Reba Barnes, Darlington's director of servant leadership.

Laura Hicks is the mother to Sawyer (‘15) and Gibson (‘19), and wife to Wendell. Before coming to Darlington, Hicks was a teacher and instructional coach at Cave Spring Elementary School.

“I can't even articulate what it means to have everyone’s love and support,” said Hicks.

Those wishing to give blood in her honor must be 16 years or older; 16-year-olds must have written consent from a parent or guardian. If you have questions, please
 contact Reba Barnes.
