Eighth-grader Carolyn Nida was recognized as Darlington's Optimist Club Student of the Semester at a special luncheon on Dec. 8.

"Carolyn makes those around her better and kinder," said Jennifer Helbing, ELA-8 dean of students. "She possesses strength of spirit, a growth mindset and is very compassionate."

Nida is a member of National Junior Honor Society, Band, Jazz Band, Student Council, Service Committee, and the cheerleading and cross country teams. She also loves to travel.

"Carolyn is a well-rounded student. She is a leader in the classroom as well as in her extracurricular activities," said Melissa Robinson, Nida's advisor. "She does it all and does it with a smile! She is a genuinely nice person who cares about everybody -- not just her group of friends. Her peers respect her and look up to her and she tries to brighten everybody's day by sharing funny stories or jokes."

Chris Holloway, band director, agreed, "Carolyn is an outstanding person and student! She has not once let me down in class, at concerts, or when out representing the band program at various honor band clinics and festivals. Not only is she intelligent and has an amazing work ethic, she also has a genuine concern and compassion for people that is a rarity with students of her age."

Carolyn is the daughter of Erin and John Nida of Rome.
