"Legendary Locals of Rome" by Russell McClanahan

Local historian Russell McClanahan has written a new book entitled "Legendary Locals of Rome," which features the stories of some of Rome's most notable citizens including Darlington's own Shem Thomas.

Thomas was the second person hired on at Darlington by founding headmaster James Ross McCain. He worked as the custodian from the school's beginning in 1905 until his death in 1949.

"He was a mentor and so well-respected, because kids didn't have to be on their guard with him," said McClanahan.

Thomas' contributions are recognized on a bronze plaque that rests next to Silver Lake, paying tribute to one of Darlington's great "teachers."

The Rome Area History Museum will host a special book-signing with Russell McClanahan on Monday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at 305 Broad St. in Rome. All proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the history museum.
