Darlington to host blood drive in honor of Erin Massey

Erin Massey enjoys a trip to the beach with her family the summer before she is diagnosed with leukemia.

Darlington School will host a blood drive on Monday, Oct. 13, in honor of Armuchee High School senior Erin Massey, who was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia in April. The Blood Assurance Blood Vessel will be at the McCallie-Kennedy Library steps that day from 2 to 7 p.m. for anyone who would like to participate.

Massey, who is also a member of Darlington School Soccer Academy, finished her fourth and final chemotherapy treatment earlier this month and was discharged from the hospital on Sept. 26 just in time to attend Armuchee's Homecoming football game and be crowned Homecoming queen.

“It is always so meaningful when an event such as this one is held in honor of one of our own,” said Reba Barnes, director of servant leadership. “There was an outpouring of support from the Darlington Community when Erin was diagnosed with leukemia last spring and we are so thankful that we can now celebration her return home. We appreciate Erin and her family for allowing us to share her story and spread awareness about leukemia and other forms of cancer."

Erin is the daughter of Jennifer and Jason Hopper of Rome. Those wishing to give blood in her honor must be 16 years or older; 16-year-olds must have written consent from a parent or guardian. If you have questions, please contact Reba Barnes.
