Rising junior Carl Schriever's app "Homework Helper" has won him first place in the House Student App Challenge, a congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competition open to high school students in participating districts.

"Carl hit the ground running with no real guidance or direction," said Ivy Brewer, associate dean of college guidance. "We are so proud of Carl's achievement and initiative in this inaugural event, and look forward to seeing more Darlington students participate in the future."

Schriever's winning app, "Homework Helper," is designed to help students with any homework that requires scrap paper and a calculator. Click here to learn more about the app and to watch a brief video about it.

"It contains a storage system, which uses Core Data, a calculator, and an area to work any problems from your homework," Schriever explained. "
The fact that with this application you don't need paper to do your homework could save countless trees."

The House Student App Challenge is designed to engage students' creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields, according to its website. Established by members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this challenge is a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to learn by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice.
Throughout the challenge period, participating students are provided opportunities to engage with various STEM educational partners located within the community to mentor and assist them with their app development.

Schriever is the son of Dr. Paul and Amy Schriever of Rome.
