Adrienne Forgette will join the Darlington Community this fall as communication instructor at the Upper School.

Adrienne will be a great addition to our fine arts faculty and will get our students excited about journalism,” said Kim Tunnell, director of fine arts. "She brings a wealth of experience in leading students through the creative process, whether working on the yearbook or newspaper, and will add a component of expression to the overall arts experience at Darlington."

Forgette will replace Alan Parish, who has taken a position as athletic director at Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Germany. She will teach several courses, including journalism and graphic design, and looks forward to building Darlington's communication arts program.

“I look forward to advising the Jabberwokk and Darlingtonian student publications and becoming an active member of the Darlington Community,” Forgette said. “It's my goal to take students to the regional and national journalism competitions, starting with the National Scholastic Press Association's fall convention in Washington, D.C. in November. By seeing the leaders in scholastic journalism, I hope the journalism students at Darlington will be inspired to create publications that rival the best in the country.”

Forgette holds a B.A. in English and Educational Studies with a Secondary English certification from Colgate University and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland at College Park.

“After an internship with my congressman during the summer going into my senior year of high school, I became disillusioned with government,” she said. “I wanted to impact the lives of others and decided teaching would be a much more efficient way to do so.”

Forgette has six years of experience teaching and advising award-winning publications, presenting at and leading trips to national journalism conferences, and preparing students to participate in summer journalism experiences. Most recently, Forgette taught English at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in Oak Bluffs, Mass., and served as co-adviser of the yearbook. Last fall, she was a presenter and write-off judge at the NSPA 2013 National High School Journalism Conference.

"I believe in creating authentic, project-based learning experiences for students," Forgette said.

During her free time, this mother of two enjoys staying active by competing in triathlons with her husband Christopher.

“As an alum of Sanjay Gupta's CNN Fit Nation triathlon team, I'm invited back each year to compete with the team," she explained. "My husband and I are training for the Nautica Malibu Triathlon this September, and we look forward to taking part in local triathlons as well.”

This means that the annual Tri for the Kids and R.A.C.E. Rome Super Sprint are sure to be on Forgette's to do list!
