The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Georgia will again be the beneficiary of proceeds raised by the Tri for the Kids youth triathlon, hosted by Darlington School and sponsored by R.A.C.E. Rome. The race will take place Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m.

“Tri for the Kids is such a unique race for all athletes," said event coordinator Beth Smith ('87), who teaches first grade at Darlington. "We have an elite division for those triathletes who compete often and want to take their competition to the next level; a beginners division for first-timers or for those who want a more laid-back atmosphere; and our physically challenged division, which is one of my favorite parts of the race. We also have the best volunteers of any race that I have experienced! The Darlington students and volunteers from the Boys and Girls Clubs make the race day experience unforgettable!"

Tri For The Kids is open to children ages 6-15. Ages 6-9 will complete a 50-yard swim in Darlington's Huffman Athletic Center swimming pool, a 2.3-mile bike ride on Cave Spring Road (closed to traffic during the race) and a half-mile run on the campus. Participants age 10-15 will complete a 100-yard swim, 4.6-mile bike ride and 1-mile run. Registration is $40 until April 18, and then the fee will increase to $45 per participant.

“We look forward to a great weekend of racing for the whole family,” Smith said. “We are also excited about raising more money for the Boys & Girls Clubs. They deserve every penny we can give them!”

Over the past five years, this event has raised over $60,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs. Additionally, children from the Boys & Girls Clubs hand paint all of the awards.

Smith urges members of the community to help spread the word. “I want us to share the details of these events with as many people as we can in and around Rome,” she said. “For the past five years, we have had participants from around the Southeast, and it's been great! Over 300 athletes registered last year, and we hope to see that number keep growing."

Registration is open at www.imathlete.com. For more information, please contact Beth Smith.
