Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Frank C. Wilson ('46), the McCallie-Kennedy Library now owns 85 Modern Library classics.

"This particular series of classics, originating in 1917, was created to make a wide variety of famous titles available to the general public," said Melinda Holmes, directory of library services. "In addition, this series was marketed for use in home libraries at affordable prices. Due to the exceptional quality, age and condition of Dr. Wilson’s collection, this gift is unique and a wonderful addition to our library."

Titles from this collection include a First Modern Library Edition of Moby Dick by Herman Melville, Thus Spake Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche and The Long Voyage Home; Seven Plays of the Sea by Eugene O’Neill to name just a few. Dr. Wilson is a Kenan professor and emeritus chief of orthopaedics as well as a Thomas Wolfe scholar at the University of North Carolina.

"Dr. Wilson visited Darlington in the fall to give two lectures to our students and our alumni on Thomas Wolfe’s life and his works," Holmes said. "The library was honored to host Dr. Wilson’s talks and was extremely pleased when Dr. Wilson contacted us following his visit to share his desire to donate his valuable book collection."
