Outstanding academic achievement has won senior Maria Barragan the honor of being named Noon Optimist Student of the Month for September.
Barragan currently ranks 10th in the class of 127. She transferred to Darlington her sophomore year from a German school in her hometown of Guavaquil, Ecuador. Since then, she has taken 9 AP and Honors courses, and was named a 2012 AP Scholar by The College Board. She speaks three languages fluently.
At Darlington, Barragan is a member of the House Senate, a head prefect in Regester House, and a member of the varsity tennis team. She has also served as an Admission Tiger Expert. Last year, she received a Coaches' Award in tennis and a Class Citizenship Award. She also spent a week volunteering with Global Partnership Ministries in Anchorage, Alaska, last spring.
The daughter of Thila Rovira Munoz and Javier Barragan Sr., she will be honored at an Optimist Club luncheon on Sept. 24.
