Senior Andrew Safigan won Best in Show and a $1,000 scholarship at the Kiwanis Club of Rome's annual art showcase for Rome and Floyd County high school students this month.

"We believe this is an excellent opportunity to promote art education in our community," said Steven McDowell of the Kiwanis Club of Rome.

Safigan has taken 11 Honors and AP courses at Darlington. He is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society and Gamma Chi Epsilon. He has also been a member of the diving and crew teams, as well as the Dar Bots robotics team.

An Art 1 student, he entered a charcoal drawing of the roofline and rose window of Darlington's Morris Chapel.

"Each school is allowed one entry per grade level," said Kathy O'Mara, Upper School art teacher. "When I saw Andrew's work earlier this year, I knew it was a perfect choice for this competition as it was outstanding in terms of composition and craftsmanship. When Mr. McDowell made the announcement, he mentioned the judges were particularly impressed with his handling of such a difficult medium."

Safigan's drawing will now be entered in the Kiwanis District Art Showcase in Carrollton, Ga., for a chance to win $7,500 in scholarship prize money. He is the son of Jamie and Steve Safigan of Rome.
