Incoming freshmen Adam Tarrant of Rome and Adrianna Young of Meridianville, Ala., have been named the inaugural recipients of the Darlington Honor Scholarship. This full scholarship is awarded to one freshman day applicant and one freshman boarding applicant each year.

“The Honor Scholarship is the most prestigious merit award offered by Darlington, and we are proud of Adam and Adrianna for the countless hours of hard work and dedication that earned them this achievement,” said James Milford, associate headmaster and director of admission. “I am confident that each of these students is a great fit for Darlington and will make long-lasting contributions to our school community. I look forward to welcoming them to campus this fall.”

Tarrant, who is currently in eighth grade at Rome Middle School, is involved in the Math Team, Knowledge Masters, Beta Club, Chorus, Band, Jazz Band and Grand Illusion (drama club and show choir). He has also been selected for All-State Chorus. Tarrant has participated in Leadership Rome and the Duke TIP Summer Studies program. He is currently working toward his Eagle Scout. The son of Melissa and Frederick Tarrant, he is also an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where he is an acolyte, a Backpack Buddies leader, and a member of EYC (youth group) and youth choir.

“When I found out I had been selected to receive the Honor Scholarship, I was so happy!” Adam said. “This is an amazing opportunity for me and I am very grateful. I am excited about attending Darlington because I’ve seen what a great experience my brother, Patrick (’13), has had over the past two years. I like meeting new people and learning about other cultures, the academic and extracurricular opportunities are fantastic, and I feel like I can reach my full potential at Darlington.”

Young, who is currently in eighth grade at Meridianville Middle School, is a member of National Junior Honor Society and captain of her softball team. A Duke TIP recipient, she has also received the Presidential Education Award. She earned first place in the University of Alabama Transportation Safety Challenge, the University of Alabama 2011 Car of the Future Prototype Contest, and the Monaco Pictures “Deck the Holidays” Short Story Contest. Young is also active in her youth group. She is the daughter of Catherine and David Young.

“I feel privileged to earn something so prestigious,” Adrianna said. “I am beyond excited to attend Darlington and meet new people from all over the world. It was evident in my visit there that the staff was top of the line and dedicated to teaching students to better their education in ways that I would not get elsewhere. Darlington seems like it will be a very enjoyable and rewarding place.”

Established in 2011 as a result of Darlington’s Second Century Campaign, the Honor Scholarship is a full-tuition award that also covers room and board, books, and any other materials and fees. It also provides for a six-week internship the summer before the student’s senior year; a Mastery Award, which is set aside to help the student develop in an area of his or her choice; and a leadership retreat. The multistage selection process involves alumni interviews and a required campus visit and interview.
