Slew of football players earn All-Area honors

Cameron Gibson

Six varsity football players have been named to the Rome News-Tribune All-Area First Team, with senior Cameron Gibson earning Co-Player of the Year honors.

Cameron Gibson, cornerback, put together one of the finest seasons in Darlington history. He intercepted 13 passes, including three that he took back for touchdowns, and had 76 tackles on the season. He was named the Region 6-A Defensive Player of the Year and was also a GSWA All-State First Team pick. He is the son of Carman and Warren Gibson of Rome.

Brad Butler, a junior quarterback, passed for 1,654 yards with 17 touchdowns and also rushed for 522 yards with six touchdowns to help lead the Tigers to their third straight Region 6-A title. He is the son of Lisa and Rhett Butler of Rome.

Gavin Lawrence, a senior offensive lineman, graded out at over 90 percent this season. He was the lineman leading the charge for the Tigers' rushing attack. He is the son of Philline and Mike Lawrence of Temple, Ga.

Nigel Matthews, a senior wide receiver, was the main target in the Tigers' passing attack. He caught 46 passes for 891 yards and 11 touchdowns to earn his second straight All-Area selection. He is the son of Altheia and Michael Green of Dallas, Ga.

Chase Tolbert, a senior linebacker, was one of the best run stoppers in Greater Rome. He had 92 tackles, including six tackles for loss and two sacks. He is the son of Missie Tolbert of Rome and Michael Tolbert of Kennesaw, Ga.

Seniors Kendall Gaylor, Spencer Jones and Cedric Spivey were named to the All-Area Second Team. Honorable Mentions went to senior Rashard Perry and sophomores Grant Moss and Logan Rice.

Butler, Gaylor, Gibson, Jones, Lawrence, Matthews, Rice and Tolbert were also named to the 6-A All-Region First Team in December. Spivey and kicker Brandon Murray were named to the All-Region Second Team.
