School awards 40 merit scholarships

Darlington is pleased to announce that there are 40 merit scholars for the 2011-12 school year. Based on academic achievements, merit scholarships are divided into specific named awards.

Established in memory of Wesley N. Coleman Jr. (’42) by his family, the Coleman Scholarship was awarded to senior Rashard Perry of Lauderhill, Fla.

Established by the C.D. Spangler Foundation and the Cornwell family, the Cornwell Scholarship was awarded to seniors Liliane Chidsey of Highlands, N.C., and Rebecca Schenk of Hickory, N.C., and sophomore Emma Parham of Asheville, N.C.

Established in memory of educator George Andrew Dorsey by friends and former students, the George Dorsey Scholarship was awarded to eighth-grader Noah Brown of Cedartown, Ga.

Established by the Drummond family in appreciation for the role that Darlington continues to play in the life of Jere Drummond (’57), the Drummond Leadership Scholarship was awarded to senior Cameron Collins of Calhoun, Ga., junior Mary Grace Denson of Rome and sophomore Grigsby Gordy of Rockmart, Ga.

Established by the Grizzard family in honor of Elson S. Floyd (’74), Darlington’s first African-American graduate, the Elson Floyd Scholarship was awarded to junior Brandon Knott of Rome; sophomores Jeremiah McClure of Rome and Kataeya Wooten of Cartersville, Ga.; freshman Jazlyn Green of Rome; and sixth-grader Jamila Wood of Powder Springs, Ga.

Established in memory of John Fitten Glenn III (’83) by family and friends, the Glenn Scholarship was awarded to senior Rachel Christopher of Douglasville, Ga.; freshman Destiny Sewell of Cedartown, Ga.; and eighth-graders Zoe and Pressley Smith of Kingston, Ga.

The Goizueta Foundation Scholarship Fund was awarded to senior Rashard Perry of Lauderhill, Fla.; sophomores Carlos Carrillo of Lindale, Ga., and Isabela Martignon of Calhoun, Ga.; and freshman Alexandra Porto of Rome.

The Vernon and Gaynelle Grizzard Scholarship, established by the Grizzard family, was awarded to senior Bonnie Rowland of Cartersville, Ga.; sophomore Joshua Buttshaw of Rome; freshman Kyle Love of Cedartown, Ga.; seventh-grader Hannah Buttshaw of Rome; and first-grader Kennedy Rose Garrett of Rockmart, Ga.

Established in memory of Amanda Hubbard de Costerd (’78) by her parents, the Hubbard de Costerd Scholarship was awarded to seniors Keenan Freyberg and Chase Tolbert of Rome; freshman Kinslee Clevenger of Rome; eighth-grader Emma Chambers of Mt. Berry, Ga.; and seventh-grader Anna Grace Turrentine of Rome.

The James Ross McCain Scholarship was awarded to sophomore Conner Hallett of Lawrenceville, Ga.

Established by the William S. “Billy” Morris III (’52) family, the Morris Scholarship was awarded to seniors Joseph DeLoach of North Little Rock, Ark., Dylan Faber of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jackson Pittard of Savannah, Ga.; junior Grace Anne Greene of McDonough, Ga.; and freshmen Charlotte Boyd of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Jenna Crutcher of Stevensville, Mich.

Established by Frank C. Wilson (’46), the Frank and Ann Wilson Merit Scholarship was awarded to senior Bonnie Rowland of Cartersville, Ga.

Established by Alice Freida Yurke (’80) in memory of her mother and grandmother, the Yurke Family Fund was awarded to sophomore Hannah Mae Deems of Taylorsville, Ga.
