Beginning this fall, Charla Brewster will serve as dean of grades 5-6 and Angela Pieroni will serve as dean of grades 7-8, announced Director of Middle School James Hutchins. As deans, they will be charged with providing instructional leadership, visionary direction, collaborative interaction and administrative oversight.

“Charla and Angela are proven leaders and their willingness to take on the additional duties that will come with this new role will only strengthen all of our current programs,” Hutchins said. “They will continue to serve as leaders of their respective grade teams, just at a greater capacity. I will count on them to provide leadership to faculty in regard to parent communication, assist teachers with appropriate assessment methods, and collect and utilize data to refine our instructional practices. I’m excited about the opportunities this structure will provide our students and the Darlington community at large.”

Brewster came to Darlington’s Lower School in 1982 to teach third grade after four years in the Georgia public school system. Since then, she has taught grades 1, 2, 3 and 5. At the Lower School, she served as chairperson of a committee charged with adopting a new math and language arts program. She was also a member of the Presidential Transition Committee in 2005. Currently, Brewster is team leader for fifth grade and co-director of an after-school program called Power Hour for students in grades 5-6. She holds a B.S. from The University of Georgia and has received Darlington’s Brown Award and Beachum Master Teaching Award. Brewster and her husband, Bill, are the parents of Lower School teacher Jennifer (Brewster) Helbing (’98) and Rachel (Brewster) Marek (’95).

Pieroni came to the Middle School in 2001 to teach science after eight years of teaching in Ohio. Since then, she has taught science to grades 5-8, served as varsity cheerleading coach, and worked on the Cooper House duty staff. She currently teaches seventh and eighth grade science and fifth and sixth grade robotics. She is also team leader for grades 7-8 and a member of the Strategic Planning Group. Pieroni holds a B.S. from the University of Dayton and an M.Ed. from Walden University and has also received Darlington’s Brown Award and Beachum Master Teaching Award. She and her husband, Joe, a math teacher at the Upper School, are the parents of current students Gianna (’17) and Jonathan (’19).
