Clements named to Professional Standards Commission

Third-grade teacher Alice Clements has been appointed to the Professional Standards Commission by Gov. Sonny Perdue.

“I felt honored to be asked to serve on this commission,” Clements said. “Professional educators have the utmost responsibility to be of good moral character. Parents entrust us with their children’s lives every day, and we have a responsibility to maintain a professional relationship with these children at all times. Teachers can influence a child to do the right thing or the wrong thing, and I think we must be held accountable for our actions. By serving on this commission, I hope to ensure that the people who are certified to teach in the State of Georgia uphold the standards that are set before us in the Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators. At Darlington, our mission statement states that we act with integrity. I think this portion of the statement is apropos for educators everywhere.”

The Professional Standards Commission is responsible for establishing and upholding ethical and professional standards within the teaching profession. The PSC has the authority to conduct investigations to determine if probable cause exists to believe that an educator has committed an act that warrants disciplinary action. The commission meets monthly. Clements will serve a three-year term as a member of the Educator Ethics Review Committee.

“This committee reviews cases where certified educators have been suspected of violating the Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators,” she explained. “We will make recommendations to the commission on the sanctions that should apply, if any.”

Clements is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a master’s degree from Berry College. She and her husband, Frank, have two daughters, Sarah (’08) and Caroline (’10).
