The 7th and 8th grade science teacher here at Darlington is Angela Pieroni. She has been teaching here for eight years, and this is her second year using the hands-on science program.

This program is designed so that students work in groups and do labs, which require working together. She likes this way of teaching better because the children get to actually experience what they are learning. Mrs. Pieroni believes everyone learns by doing and it gets stuck in your head better then reading, listening, or watching something.

Our new building has created spacious science rooms for Mrs. Pieroni as well as Coach Smith, Mrs. Collier and Dr. Hutchins, the other Middle School science teachers. Mrs. Pieroni’s room is now fully equipped with everything needed for science experiments. She used to have to walk all the way to the bathroom for water, so having 10 sinks in her room now makes it easier. She also enjoys the new natural lighting provided by the sun. This is such an environmentally friendly way to see, and it is less harsh on eyesight then the florescent lighting.

Mrs. Pieroni usually splits the students into groups depending on the size of the class. There are an equal amount of boys and girls in each group, so different opinions come from different genders. She splits us into groups so we can learn to cooperate and listen to others. These groups are also good for comparing thoughts and stating your opinion. It gives you a chance to be a leader and stand up for yourself, and to interact with people who you may not know as well outside of the class.

Mrs. Pieroni is so excited about our new Middle School building and all its features. She loves her room and says it is so much easier to get all the materials. She also has plenty of room for all her activities. She can’t wait to see what the future holds, and she is ready to spend many more years in this wonderful, beautiful building.
