School announces 36 merit scholars

Darlington is pleased to announce that there are 36 merit scholars for the 2009-10 school year. Based on academic achievements, merit scholarships are divided into specific named awards.

Established in memory of Wesley N. Coleman Jr. (’42) by his family, the Coleman Scholarship was awarded to junior Wendi Betting of Orange Park, Fla.

Established by the C.D. Spangler Foundation and the Cornwell family, the Cornwell Scholarship was awarded to sophomore Rebecca Schenk of Hickory, N.C., and sophomore Randall Jackson of Brasstown, N.C.

Established in memory of educator George Andrew Dorsey by friends and former students, the George Dorsey Scholarship was awarded to sixth-grader Noah Brown of Cedartown, Ga.

Established by the Drummond family in appreciation for the role that Darlington continues to play in the life of Jere Drummond (’57), the Drummond Leadership Scholarship was awarded to sophomore Cameron Collins of Calhoun, Ga., and freshman Mary Grace Denson of Rome.

Established by the Grizzard family in honor of Elson S. Floyd (’74), Darlington’s first African-American graduate, the Elson Floyd Scholarship was awarded to juniors Brisha Askew and Issac Nichols of Rome; ninth-grader Brandon Knott of Kennesaw, Ga.; eighth-graders Jeremiah McClure, Monay Turner and Theo Welch, all of Rome; and seventh-grader Jazlyn Green of Rome.

Established in memory of John Fitten Glenn III (’83) by family and friends, the Glenn Scholarship was awarded to sophomore Rachel Christopher of Douglasville, Ga.; seventh-grader Destiny Sewell of Cedartown, Ga.; and sixth-graders Zoe and Pressley Smith of Kingston, Ga.

The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund was awarded to sophomore Rashard Perry of New Bedford, Mass., and eighth-grader Carlos Carrillo of Lindale, Ga.

The Vernon and Gaynelle Grizzard Scholarship, established by the Grizzard family, was awarded to senior Emily Braden, junior Frederick Washington and fifth-grader Kelsey Garrett, all of Rome, and seventh-grader Kyle Love of Cedartown, Ga.

The Robert P. Holding Scholarship, established by the Robert P. Holding Foundation Inc., was awarded to junior Annie Stewart of Charlotte, N.C.

Established in memory of Amanda Hubbard de Costerd (’78) by her parents, the Hubbard de Costerd Scholarship was awarded to juniors Felicity Witt, Sara Jessica Crawford and Ben McBurnett, and seventh-grader Kinslee Clevenger, all of Rome.

The James Ross McCain Scholarship was awarded to junior Joy Diaz of Riverdale, Ga.

Established by the William S. “Billy” Morris III (’52) family, the Morris Scholarship was awarded to seniors Paige Black of Palmyra, N.J., Victoria Ross of New York City and Diego Figueroa of Pensacola, Fla., and juniors Chad Collins of Lithonia, Ga., and Chelsea Winfrey of Morrow, Ga.

Established by Frank C. Wilson (’46), the Frank and Ann Wilson Merit Scholarship was awarded to junior Keila Gunter of Laurel, Md.

Established by Alice Freida Yurke (’80) in memory of her mother and grandmother, the Yurke Family Fund was awarded to eighth-grader Hannah Deems of Taylorsville, Ga.
