2nd Grade is Out of this World: Constellations!

Second grade has spent the last few days learning all about constellations and the Greek myths and legends that explain their origin.

Learning about mythology has allowed for the class to explore the history and geography of ancient times. It has also led to discussions about why ancient Greece was so important to our own civilization.

We investigated traditional constellations found in our sky as well as constellations that open the door for us to explore a myth from ancient cultures. Today, with the help of Mrs. Wardlaw, students had the opportunity to start a rotation through different stations. Each station created a chance for each child to explore the constellations through technology.

For instance, the children were thrilled to use a Google cardboard device, which allowed them to travel to space and explore the planets and stars through virtual reality. Others learned about and created circuits using Chibitronics. Following the pattern of a constellation, students placed tape and stickers, along with LED lights, on a sheet of black paper in order to get it to light up. They learned about positive and negative charges, and how to complete a circuit.

Some students had the task of researching a constellation and retelling the information in front of a green screen. Finally, a few students built models of constellations using marshmallows and spaghetti.
