First- and second-grade classes combined last week in order to complete a cooperative STEM project.
Each group of four students (a mixture of both first- and second-graders) was given the task of creating a way to lift a pail of water (similar to Jack and Jill) using only newspaper. The only requirement was that each team had to use a minimum of four links on their chain. Once groups thought of their method, they were able to test it out and make the necessary adjustments.
It was a great exercise in planning, brainstorming, teamwork and resilience.
