Backpack Buddy Food Drive

Recently the service committee, composed of students in third through eighth grade, invited a member from Rome Action Ministries to speak about hunger in Rome and the surrounding areas. The group learned one out of every five children has food insecurity meaning that their families make tough decisions on whether to pay bills or pay for food.

There are over 600 kids in Rome who get breakfast and lunch at school, but when they go home they may not get any dinner. On the weekends, many of them do not have food or get regular meals. A few years ago a group of local teachers and counselors worked with Rome Ministries and developed the Backpack Buddy Program. This is a group that collects food, packs it in a bag, delivers it to schools, and the teachers put the food in the child's backpack. This way the children have food on the weekend.

During the month of November the service committee challenged students in grades pre-K through eighth grade to bring in food and pack 500 backpack buddies. In true Darlington fashion, we succeeded our goal and packed 605 bags. We thank everyone who helped us help others.
