English Class Works With Themes in “American Born Chinese”

Tuesday, October 6, 2015 | By Beth Wilson | 289 views

In preparation for their test, the freshmen in English 1 graphically represented how Gene Yang developed themes in his novel, "American Born Chinese."

They first worked in small groups and as a class to identify and articulate the themes of the book. Next, they were asked to show how Yang uses three converging plots to develop the themes they identified. They had to decide as a group how they would complete the task, from planning their project to organizing themselves to distributing tasks.

Ms. Wilson's fourth period decided to reproduce key frames from the book that demonstrate important changes in characters. They believed that the characters' changes best demonstrate the themes of the book regarding personal identity, especially when it comes to judging others and accepting ourselves.
