Merit Scholarships Awarded by Darlington School
New applicants are eligible to apply for one or more of Darlington's merit scholarships. See scholarship descriptions and requirements below.
The Coleman Scholarship Established in memory of Wesley N. Coleman Jr. (’42) by his family, the Coleman Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student from Duval County, Fla. Candidates must show strong academic records as well as good citizenship.
The Cornwell Scholarship Established in 2000 by the C.D. Spangler Foundation, Brooke (’70T) and Stephen L. Cornwell (’70) and William D. Cornwell Jr. (’67), the Cornwell Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded to a qualified boarding student from the state of North Carolina. Full scholarships are available. Candidates must have strong academic credentials in addition to good citizenship and a desire to be an active member of the Darlington School student body.
The George Andrew Dorsey Scholarship Established in 1991 by friends and former students in memory of beloved teacher George Andrew Dorsey, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving Middle School boy.
The Drummond Leadership Scholarship Established in 2007 in appreciation for the role that Darlington School continues to play in the life of Jere A. Drummond (’57), the Drummond Leadership Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving day student who exhibits leadership potential and desires to grow and learn from the Darlington School educational experience. The scholarship is established by Patsy Drummond, their children and grandchildren on the occasion of Mr. Drummond’s 50th reunion and in proud recognition of his receiving Darlington’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
The Elson S. Floyd Scholarship Established by the Grizzard Family in honor of Elson S. Floyd (’74), this scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Darlington students, either male or female, of African-American descent who possess strong character and good citizenship skills.
The Glenn Scholarship Established in 1984 in memory of John Fitten Glenn III (’83) by family and friends, the Glenn Scholarship is awarded to students who show strong character and academic potential.
The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund Funded in 2001, the Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund awards full and partial scholarships to Hispanic/Latino students whose families currently reside in the United States. Candidates must have high academic achievement, be active participants in their school activities and wish to continue that level of activity at Darlington.
The Vernon and Gaynelle Grizzard Scholarship Established in 1993 in honor of Vernon and Gaynelle Grizzard by their children, the Grizzard Scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving students with primary consideration given to the children or grandchildren of employees of the Grizzard family.
The Robert P. Holding Scholarship Established by the Robert P. Holding Foundation, Inc., the Robert P. Holding Scholarship provides financial assistance to students who are residents of North Carolina. Consideration is given to scholastic record, leadership qualifications and potential, and other extracurricular achievements without regard to financial need.
The Hubbard de Costerd Scholarship Established in 2000 by Patsy and Jerry Hubbard to honor the memory of their daughter, Amanda Hubbard de Costerd (’78), the Hubbard de Costerd Scholarship is awarded to deserving day students from Floyd County. Consideration is given to good character and academic record.
The Huffman Scholarship Established by Rocky Huffman (’67) in honor of his father, the Huffman Scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students, with preference given to day students who exhibit financial need. The recipient should be a well-rounded student who maintains an above-average grade point and who takes an active role in multiple school activities. This award is made at Middle School Honors Day and continues for the Upper School term.
The James Ross McCain Scholarship Established in 1981 by an anonymous foundation grant, the James Ross McCain Scholarship supports boarding students from Georgia and the Southeast. Candidates must be of Christian background and display enlightened leadership in their school and community, outstanding academic achievement and initiative in all aspects of their lives. This scholarship is awarded based on merit, without regard to financial need.
The Morris Scholarship Established in 2000 by the William S. “Billy” Morris III (’52) family, the Morris Scholarship funds five partial scholarships for resident students at any one time on the basis of character, strength, leadership potential and academic ability. These awards are renewable based on student performance.
The Frank and Ann Wilson Merit Scholarship Established in 1995 by Dr. Frank C. Wilson (’46) of Chapel Hill, N.C., the Frank and Ann Wilson Merit Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and character.
The Yurke Family Fund Established by Alice Freida Yurke (’80) in memory of her mother, Natalia Yurke, and grandmother, Marie Felder, the Yurke Family Fund provides assistance to a student who has actively demonstrated support for the growth of religious tolerance and diversity of religious opinion at Darlington School.
