There are the obvious reasons: Darlington’s proven track record in preparing students well for college, its serenely beautiful campus, its impressive facilities and wealth of academic, athletic, and social opportunities. But more significant are the friendly spirit of the School and its long history of inspiring students to grow intellectually, spiritually, morally, physically, culturally, and socially. Life at Darlington centers around an English house system unique among American boarding schools. All teachers and boarding and day students in the Upper School are members of one of the six Houses, the heads of which also serve as the School’s admission officers. Students join Darlington by being admitted to one of the Houses. Student prefects manage the life in the Houses and also sit with the heads of house on the House Senate where they help to shape the rules by which everyone at the School lives. The School’s distinctive buildings nestle around a spring-fed lake where, legend has it, the Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto camped to trade with the Cherokee Indians. Located on the outskirts of a picturesque Southern town full of history, Darlington is only an hour’s drive from Atlanta and Chattanooga and offers trips almost every weekend to cultural and athletic events, outdoor adventures, theme parks, and shopping centers—perfect for students who want to go to school in the South and explore the world.

How does this happen? At Darlington, most teachers live on the campus and in the Houses with their students. They form relationships with one another that last a lifetime. Hundreds of alumni return each year to reminisce and reconnect with their former teachers.
