Writing Curriculum

Children are full of great ideas, and that is why it is so important for them to make the journey from thinkers to writers. Every academic discipline is key at the Lower School, and writing is intertwined with each one of them. Darlington teachers are committed to giving students ample opportunity in a variety of ways to help them become proficient writers, as they compose dialogues, fantasies, poems, persuasive paragraphs, realistic narratives, book reports, journals, essays, short stories, letters, and research papers among many other writing opportunities.

Writing is a major pillar of learning and not just a communication skill. It's how we learn to reason, to use evidence, to persuade, to reflect, and to create. At Darlington Lower School, writing begins in Pre-K, and teachers at every grade level are committed to giving students an opportunity to write every single day. The best way to learn how to write is to write. Darlington also believes the best way to master a thought or concept is to express it in simple, noble prose.
