Music is celebrated daily at the Lower School. Each child feels success in the music classroom because all students are encouraged to become actively involved in the process of learning music. The program includes choral singing, movement, instrument playing, voice technique, musical notation, dance, music terminology, and music history. Music of all types from many places and periods is studied and the lives and works of famous composers are a basic part of the curriculum.
Students in grades Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Pre-First are physically engaged in the music process by playing a variety of rhythm instruments, dancing, moving creatively, active listening, and using their phenomenal imaginations. Song based lessons are used to teach the basic music concepts that are first experienced, then identified and labeled, and creatively reinforced.
The Yamaha Music in Education lab is the classroom for students in grades 1 though 5. This keyboard lab provides a contemporary focus to the musical and curricular traditions of the music classroom with the belief that each child should be a daily participant in the music-making process, rather than a passive onlooker. This is not just a keyboard program; it is a tool with which to teach students with an innovative, comprehensive manner. The lab provides opportunities for students to increase their willingness to participate in the music-making process.
All students perform on stage before the student body at least once during the school year. Each grade level presents a musical for their parents, peers, and the community to enjoy. Preparation for a play is important for the student's education due to reading, speaking, creating, singing, thinking, working as a team, and developing self-esteem. Through drama and music students gain confidence, poise and pride
In the words of Plato, "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." It is Darlington's goal to instill in the hearts and souls of students a love and appreciation for music that will lead to a lifelong enjoyment of and participation in the arts.
