The library program is designed to motivate students to become lifelong readers and discriminating learners. Encouraging reading beyond the classroom is the primary goal. The library is open to all students every school day. Students may visit anytime with their teacher's permission. Materials purchased for the library include books and videos to enhance classroom curriculm.
The pre-k students visit the library twice a week for story time and to check out books. Story time choices focus on whatever letter they are learning in the classroom.
Kindergarten and pre-first students visit twice a week for story time and to check out books. Library curriculum focuses on learning about various children's authors.
First graders read fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen; second graders read Caldecott winning books; third graders compare popular movies to the original book; fourth graders study poetry and Shakespeare; fifth graders study Greek mythology.
Students are also taught library skills in accordance with SACS accreditation standards. These include how to use an almanac and atlas, fiction vesus nonfiction, and use of the Dewey Decimal System.
Students also undertake specific projects, such as when fourth-graders produced a version of Hamlet in the spring and fifth-graders invented a myth.
Every year the library invites a well-known children's author to visit. Past speakers include Patricia Reilly Giff, David Wisniewski, Jack Gantos, and Robert San Souci.
