Middle School Director

At Darlington’s Middle School, our motto – Wisdom more than Knowledge, Service beyond Self, Honor above Everything – is the cornerstone of all that we do. Our commitment to this philosophy is evident in our classrooms, hallways, athletic fields and programs where we seek to develop our students’ vision of the world by fostering understanding of both responsibility and accountability through the sometimes difficult early years of adolescence.

Guided by a challenging, developmentally appropriate program, the Middle School is committed to educating the whole child. Our curriculum addresses the varying social, emotional and intellectual needs of early adolescence. Knowledge and skills are developed through opportunities and experiences that foster critical thinking, curiosity, creativity and problem solving. Learning specialists, teachers, coaches and administrators work collaboratively to understand how each student learns and to meet those unique needs in a creative and stimulating environment that addresses both strengths and weaknesses using the model articulated by the Schools Attuned program.

Each student at the Middle School has a faculty adviser who is responsible for individual program evaluation and academic counseling. The student and adviser meet once a week to review academic progress and to discuss other extracurricular and non-academic topics. The adviser acts as the point person for both parents and students, and the Advisory Program provides an opportunity for group discussions during which students are able to view themselves as part of the larger group as well as individuals who have important contributions to make.

Throughout the Middle School, our programs integrate opportunities for student leadership. Peer Helpers are an essential part of our commitment to teach the whole child. These student leaders understand the importance and value of hard work and citizenship. Rising eighth-graders who are interested in this program go through a rigorous selection process that stresses integrity and ethical conduct.

Whether students are running through the woods simulating Richard Connell’s “Most Dangerous Game,” proudly displaying their science fair project, scoring on the athletic field, gathering at the flagpole, or just hanging out talking, Darlington’s Middle School has a culture and a feel all its own. It is a place where students are encouraged to maximize their potential and transform that potential into success.
