Welcome from the Director

Stephen Bartholomew, Ed. D.
Lower School Director

There is no easy definition of the Lower School’s spirit. Rather it is comprised of many different qualities that combine to build a sound foundation for life. You might say it is a spirit of adventure in learning and caring about each other. A creative spirit in the arts. A competitive spirit in athletics. A spirit of striving for excellence in whatever we do – as students, as teachers and as parents.

As parents, we want the best possible life for our children. That, of course, includes providing them with every opportunity for learning and academic achievement. We want our children to have the knowledge and skills to build long and rewarding careers while also realizing the importance of hard work, responsibility and good citizenship.

Darlington’s Lower School provides an atmosphere that stimulates intellectual curiosity and love of learning. In varied learning settings, students are encouraged to master skills and form habits that prepare them to meet the demands of a middle and high school college-preparatory curriculum. Darlington School understands the unique needs of early childhood, kindergarten and elementary students and is sensitive to their overall development.

The Lower School program encourages students to explore and expand their talents in academics, arts, athletics, leadership, community service and character development. Our faculty and staff develop self-esteem and self-confidence in students by recognizing individual and group accomplishments. Darlington School inspires individual and community conscience with emphasis on personal integrity and high expectations for appropriate conduct. The program and curriculum offered at each grade level ensure rigorous challenges along with unique opportunities for success.

The efforts of students to excel, the dedication of faculty, and the support of parents create a spirit of commitment that forms the unique culture of Darlington’s Lower School. We could not reach our goals without the support of parents who have assumed their share of responsibility for our present and future success. Tiger PRIDE encourages participation in many areas, including volunteering time and talent for a variety of school-wide programs and events. The enthusiasm and generosity of parents provide the impetus for our continued growth and advancement.

The Lower School is forever grateful for the loyalty and participation of our students and parents. In turn, the faculty and staff are deeply committed to our families and to the pursuit of nurturing and educating the young minds entrusted to our care.
