According to an account by our founder, Mr. J. Paul Cooper,
on two separate occasions Mr. Darlington gave 500 books of the school's choosing to the
original library and also established a fund to purchase additional books. At
his death in 1920, another 1000 books were bequeathed from his estate to the school
library. In the early 1920's the collection totaled approximately 3000 books
in all, making him the major benefactor to the early library of the school. The 1923-1924
bulletin proudly announced that from a recent report made of the libraries of the Seventh
District, Georgia, The Darlington Library ranked highest in the number and character
of its books. This picture of an Honor Council meeting in the library in Old Main was
taken in the early 1920s after the school had moved to the DeSoto Park site.
