Middle Grades Rotating Schedule

The middle grades daily schedule is much more than a routine. It is a teacher-led academic exploration. Students are nurtured and empowered through class periods that allow them the time to deep-dive into projects and truly focus on their passions and pursuits.

Darlington’s schedule was designed with the following goals in mind:
  1. Enhance the level of intellectual and academic engagement while maintaining the expectation that Darlington is a community of learners. Examples of this in action include longer class periods, less transitions during the course of a school day, time for reflection, inquiry, and ownership of learning.
  2. Create time for faculty professional development to enhance our culture of professionalism and collaboration. Examples of this in action include faculty development time each Wednesday morning, an emphasis on “relevance of programs” in the school’s strategic plan, and continued strategic use of resources given to the school during the Second Century Campaign for faculty enhancement.
  3. Build sense of community and engagement through the student experience. Examples of this in action include a more effective use of assembly and chapel in the Upper School, a standardized student wellness program, and a greater awareness of the pace of the day (both academic and extracurricular).
  4. Create a schedule that allows for a sense of consistency of curriculum and the ability to explore the Portrait of a Graduate in practice.
