Servant Leadership: Hands and feet that make a difference
February 14, 2015
Darlington students learn early the importance of living a selfless life that reflects service beyond self. With the creation of a dedicated servant leadership program, students have been able to take part in school-sanctioned service projects that make a huge impact on the lives of the citizens in the Greater Rome community.
Seniors make bracelets for "Arm Kandi" for their senior service project. Proceeds made from the sale of these bracelets will be donated to Cancer Navigators in memory of former Darlington faculty member Kandi Riddle.

I want to invite you to have a teachable moment with your child this week—on Thursday, to be exact. From 2 to 6:30 p.m. at the Upper School library, Blood Assurance will conduct a blood drive in honor of our very own Kandi Riddle.
Darlington School will host a blood drive on Thursday, April 21, in honor of longtime faculty member Kandi Riddle, who is battling cancer. The Blood Assurance Blood Vessel will be at the McCallie-Kennedy Library steps that day from 2 to 7 p.m. for anyone who would like to participate.
The Darlington Community will walk thousands of laps around Silver Lake on April 1 during Light the Lake, the school’s annual Relay for Life-inspired fundraiser. Proceeds raised by this event will support Cancer Navigators, a local organization that provides resources to all who are touched by the life-changing process of dealing with cancer.
Darlington School was one of more than 100 schools across the United States and Canada to receive a free DyKnow Classroom as part of a giveaway that will allow schools to experience the educational benefits of technology-enhanced teaching and learning without financial obligation.

Through the award, Darlington will receive DyKnow Vision®, interactive education software; DyKnow Monitor®, classroom management software; and other services totaling nearly $3,000. DyKnow software is currently used by thousands of educators in K-12 and higher education institutions worldwide.

“We decided to use this software on our cart of computers for grades 7-8,” said Kandi Riddle, technology coordinator. “Through the use of DyKnow Monitor®, our teachers are able to maintain control of the classroom while promoting responsible use of the computer. The software allows them to view a thumbnail of every student’s computer screen, which means there won’t be a student in the back of the classroom browsing the internet or checking e-mail unless the teacher has approved it. DyKnow Vision® offers another exciting opportunity to blend learning and technology by engaging students through interactive polls and quizzes.”

Laura Konkle, DyKnow president, said it is a privilege to work with educators who are committed to discovering new teaching and learning possibilities through technology. “Each of the awarded schools has a defined plan for leveraging DyKnow software,” she said, “and we look forward to supporting their efforts as new teaching and learning possibilities are realized through the technology.”

Lower School focuses on technology in the classroom

Ten years ago, Darlington kindergarteners were excited to be called on to write the letter of the day on the chalkboard. Today, they are enthusiastically writing words and symbols using SMART Board technology, which has the ability to save or print the child’s handwriting or convert it to a keyboarding font.
